The Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska is home to the world’s largest sockeye salmon run and is a significant contributor to Alaska’s economy. For two decades, Bristol Bay has been ground zero for advocacy in support of salmon, clean water, and Alaskan Native rights in the face of industrial mining interests that are intent on developing the Pebble Mine. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has authority under the Clean Water Act to stop the Pebble Mine, issued a preliminary decision in May 2022 that would help protect the Bristol Bay watershed and the communities and wildlife that depend on it. With the EPA poised to issue a final decision on the Pebble Mine by the end of the year, we encourage you to learn more and get involved in support of actions to protect Bristol Bay.
