BIDEN ADMINISTRATION GRANTS LONG FOUGHT PROTECTIONS FOR BRISTOL BAY AND BLOCKS PEBBLE MINE

The Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska is home to the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon run, which has sustained the region’s Indigenous peoples for millennia and supports tens of thousands of jobs. In January 2023, after decades of work from Alaska Native groups and the environmental community, the Biden administration used its authorities under the Clean Water Act to block the proposed Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay. The Pebble Mine would have devastated the Bristol Bay watershed and a way of life for the Indigenous peoples who have lived in the region since time immemorial. By protecting this irreplaceable watershed, the Biden administration has helped to safeguard one of the most valuable commercial fisheries in the world as well as the health and livelihoods of local communities who depend on Bristol Bay for traditional cultural practices, subsistence, and their well-being.
